As Autumn approaches, many of us feel the first stirrings of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). For anybody who suffers from this condition, we know that it’s a problem with many faces, many components, it's relentless. 

Most of the year we feel just fine. When the weather begins to change, we feel the subtle creeping of depression and insomnia, the twin frustrations of SAD which seem to feed each other. SAD cannot necessarily be cured, but it can be treated and managed with a variety of methods. Over the next few weeks we will address these treatment approaches on the Neuro Armour blog, and we hope to show that CBD is beneficial and effective as part of a broad therapy regimen for people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. 

The first adjustment we'll address is that it is absolutely necessary is to ensure that you are getting enough sleep. In fact, it is not possible to overstate the importance of sleep because it touches on every aspect of your life. The amount of sleep you get per night is a vital indicator of your overall health and well-being. We spend up to one-third of our lives asleep, and the quality of our sleep health remains an important consideration throughout our lifespan. Sleep is involved in the healing and repair of your body, heart, and blood vessels.  Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle that can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.

Most of us know that it’s incredibly important to get a good night’s sleep, but too often in our fast-paced lives, we sacrifice sleep for other things. Some might have physical issues which can interfere with rest and relaxation. When we find ourselves in a sleep deficit, there are a number of known negative side effects that can dramatically impact our lives.

  1. Lack of sleep causes accidents. Some of the biggest disasters in history have been caused by sleep deprivation. The meltdown at Chernobyl was caused by a sleep-deprived technician. Sleeplessness can be a public safety hazard when driving, every bit as dangerous as driving drunk.
  2. Sleep loss impairs concentration and problem-solving. Lack of sleep is harmful to a number of cognitive processes. There are physical processes which occur during sleep that make it easier to retain information and to apply learned knowledge. Sleepiness also increases forgetfulness.
  3. Sleep deprivation can lead to a number of serious health problems. Chronic sleep disorders expose us to increased risk of heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and more. Inadequate sleep has been linked to immune system deficiencies and heightened risk of infection.
  4. Lack of sleep causes depression. Over time, lack of sleep can contribute to the symptoms of depression. Insomnia has a strong link to depression. A 2007 study showed that people with insomnia are 5 times more likely to suffer depression as those without.  
  5. Losing sleep can lead to gaining weight. According to a 2004 study, people who sleep less than six hours a day are 30% more likely to be obese than those who slept seven to nine hours.
  6. Sleep loss causes moodiness. In a two-year study, 78 medical residents tracked their sleep and intermittently recorded their emotional responses to various stimuli. Researchers found that the fatigue associated with lack of sleep intensified the negative emotions of participants.

This is just a small sample of the potential negative effects of sleep loss. By some estimates, up to 70 million people in the United States suffer from insomnia, insufficient sleep, or another sleep disorder. It’s impossible to measure the impacts this has on society. It's important to note that sleep issues are a very common symptom of SAD.
